The main purpose of the control operator in an amateur station is to ensure that the station operates in compliance with regulations. This role is crucial as it involves overseeing all aspects of the station's operations to confirm that they adhere to the rules and guidelines set by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and other relevant authorities. The control operator is responsible for the proper use of frequencies, power levels, and modes of operation, ensuring that transmissions do not interfere with other communications and that the station's activities remain within the law.

Maintaining equipment is important for the functionality of the station but does not encompass the broader regulatory responsibilities that the control operator holds. Managing club affairs and handling financial matters are tasks that may be relevant in a club context but are not intrinsic to the primary duties of overseeing compliance with amateur radio regulations.
